Prentice Who We Teach

An Unrivaled Student Experience for Students Who Learn Differently

By The Prentice School–

For over 30 years, the faculty and staff at The Prentice School have created a nurturing learning environment for students who struggle in a traditional classroom setting. Our goal is to produce students who are effective communicators, critical thinkers, self-directed learners and technologically proficient creators. To that end, we have developed The Prentice Approach. This approach combines 16 aspects of learning and education to create a unique, evidence-based atmosphere where structured literacy and math are the focus in which every student can thrive.

As with any school, our success begins with a focus on our students. We take their inherent strengths and work to make them stronger. Then, we work to develop the child as a whole. This allows the students to build their academic knowledge while growing their self-esteem and self-confidence, thus producing more productive, independent adults. Students taught with this method become self-motivated learners who can advocate for themselves and others both inside and outside of the educational environment.

To implement this, we carefully plan our classroom setting. We use research-based curriculum and teaching methods that align with the California Dyslexia Guidelines developed from AB 1369. We are one of the leading schools that specializes in a structured literacy program that employs direct, explicit, multisensory reading instruction that includes decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. In addition to utilizing state-mandated curriculum, we offer specialized educational programs to assist with providing for the unique needs of the students, including: ST Math, Scholastic Reading Counts, iReady, and Step Up To Writing. We also offer enrichment classes in art, music, technology and media in order to ensure a well-rounded education.

Every Prentice School classroom teacher carries credentials from the state of California. We supplement this by providing extensive professional development to ensure teachers are experts in structured literacy and specially designed academic instruction so they can meet the unique and varied needs of students with learning differences. Enrichment teachers have specialized training in their respective areas of educational technology, science, art, music, physical education, and social skills. Finally, the school’s impressive ratio of one teacher for every ten students means each student receives individualized attention, increasing success in his or her academic career.

Since the environment here encourages self-confidence and self-esteem building, it has positive impacts on all areas of the students’ lives, not just academics. These benefits can range from building the students’ social circle to rebuilding family relationships. Enrolling does not just affect the life of the child; it also improves the quality of life for the entire family.

We also offer several after-school clubs, a library, and tutoring to help driven students continue to learn with one-on-one assistance even after school is over. And we have on-site speech and occupational therapists who use Educational Assistive Technology (EdAT) to help each student learn how to learn better. While our three decades spent honing and refining the best way to provide a world-class education has yielded an excellent product, we continue to examine, research, and implement new methods of teaching in order to ensure that we are providing the best possible education to every student who attends The Prentice School.
