My daughter, Elise St.Clair, graduate of Prentice in 1999, and has been hired by Clear Channel, a large, nationwide radio and broadcasting company. She is head of the News Team for the afternoons for stations KSSK and KHVH in Hawaii. She researches and broadcasts (reads) the news to the islands twice an hour from 12-6 pm Monday through Friday. Soon her picture and biographical information will be posted on each station website.

A bit of history… After completing Prentice with many awards for her efforts, she went on to Foothill High School and graduated with a GPA of 3.7, OCC and graduated with honors and U of Hawaii, Manoa, also graduating with honors. While at UH, she worked in the Leisure Center teaching sailing and swimming and leading hikes and excursions around the island of Oahu. She was recognized as for best campus employee for her first year there. She was also on the sailing team and won awards for her participation. She hosted 2 radio shows, both during drive-time, one in the morning and one in the afternoon on weekdays on KTUH, the campus radio station and one of the most powerful stations on the island, used for national disaster broadcasts. After graduation in June, 2009 with a BA in Art and a minor in Music, she managed to land a job with a commercial station. She is now a DJ for private parties and local clubs and commercial establishments. She is known for her love of Indi Rock music. KTUH is requesting that she return for a morning slot now that she has her commercial station time determined. I am happy to report that she has made it in her field having launched her career with Clear Channel!

Her skills were taught and developed here at Prentice. When she arrived in the 5th grade, she COULD NOT READ. Her struggle to learn and find a friend base and some self-esteem was rewarded here. Mrs. Bullard and Mrs. Lerner and others not here now are directly responsible for teaching her to excel. She used the skills learned here to make a life for herself. Her success is a direct reflection on this school and the capabilities she found she had. She learned how to learn and that anything was possible here. Her love of art was enriched and enhanced here and she went on to design the cover of the Yearbook for Foothill High School her senior year, posters and tee shirts and flyers for KTUH and commercial stationary, business cards and wedding invitations.

Thanks you all.
Jessica St. Clair

Here at Prentice we prepare students for their future challenges. It is always wonderful news to hear off their achievements outside of our school. Recently, Marilyn Wilson, the director of the Mater Dei High School Learning Center sent us an e-mail informing us of the success of our alumni students at Mater Dei. She is very proud of those students, one student in particular is one A away from being a straight A student in the 10th grade. We are all proud of our students and want to congratulate them for all their hard work.

The Prentice School likes to think of itself as an extended family, and one of its kids, David Rosenfield, class of 2002, came back to talk with 8th graders as part of Mrs. Lerner’s 8th Grade Seminar Class.

David began his talk by admitting that he used to spend vast amounts of time in the principal’s office at Prentice and consequently, did not really enjoy his 8 long years here since we made him work. However, he now realizes how important the Prentice foundation was for his academic future. He graduated from Foothill High School and, since he had learning issues and was a terrible test taker, he ended up at junior college – which he quite enjoyed, claiming that he had some of the best teaching ever.

David is now transferring to U.C. Berkeley as a junior and plans to attend law school upon graduation. He first got the debating bug back at Prentice when he was assigned to act as an attorney in a court trial in Mrs. Lerner’s U.S. History Class! He has also spent time studying in Barcelona, Spain and interning for Representative Mary Bono in Washington, D.C.

Captivating 40 8th graders for 30 minutes, David mentioned that the students did not have to beat other students in classroom work; they just had to outlast them. He also stated that the obstacles or brick walls that students with learning issues encounter are not there to stop them, but merely there to show the students how badly they want to succeed. Finally, he used the movie, “Rudy”, which he first saw here at Prentice, as one of the motivating forces in his life.
Karen Lerner

Logan Dooley – USA Gymnastics / Trampoline

On July 1 at the U.S. Trampoline Olympic Trials final selection event in Kansas City, MO, Orange County athlete Logan Dooley of Lake Forest, California was named as the Alternate Athlete for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Men’s Trampoline Team. Two of Dooley’s teammates, Chris Estrada of Colorado Springs and Erin Blanchard of Lafayette, LA, were the first-place finishers for the men’s and women’s teams respectively, and were nominated to represent the U.S. Olympic Trampoline Team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, with Dooley and Alaina Hebert of Broussard, LA, named as the Alternates in their respective divisions.

Dooley, age 20, who usually trains under the tutelage of 2000 U.S. Olympic Coach Robert Null at World Elite Gymnastics in Rancho Santa Margarita, was selected in May of 2007 to join with other members of the U.S. National Trampoline Team in an intense year-long training program under the direction of national team coordinator and 2008 U.S. Olympic Coach Dmitri Poliarush at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. All four of the selected members of the 2008 Olympic Trampoline Team are currently training under Poliarush at the Colorado Springs facility as they continue to hone their skills in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games.

A discipline of gymnastics, Trampoline was introduced as an official Olympic event at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia. Another Orange County (and Lake Forest) trampolinist who trained under Coach Robert Null, Jennifer Parilla, represented the U.S. in both the 2000 (Sydney) and 2004 (Athens) Olympic Games. This is the first time that the U.S. Men’s team has also qualified to compete in this relatively new Olympic sport, which requires the high-flying execution of ten consecutive complex twisting, spinning, flipping, frontward and backward maneuvers – much like those performed by Olympic divers – but with the athlete catapulting himself on a 7-by-14-foot trampoline bed, rocketing upwards of 25 feet and performing a different aerial skill (somersaults, pikes and twists) on each jump. The trampolinists must each perform 10 different aerial skills with great precision, with no extra bounces in between each touch of the trampoline bed – and must “stick” the final landing. Like other gymnastics disciplines, scoring is based on a combination of execution and degree of difficulty scores for each skill performed in the routine.

In the 2008 Olympic Selection Points Ranking, athletes earned points based on their three highest finishes out of the four designated selection events: Grenzland Cup, March 14-15 in Aachen, Germany; U.S. Elite Challenge, April 18-19; Visa Championships, May 22-24; and the final selection event held yesterday (July 1). With eight national finalists in the final selection event for the men, Dooley and Estrada both posted 102.50 points, with the tie-breaker rule giving the win to Estrada Neil Gulati of Irvine, one of Dooley’s World Elite Gymnastics teammates also coached by Null, took third with 96.60 points . Blanchard won the women’s competition with a total score of 101.00 while Hebert finished second with 100.70 among the five national finalists competing for the women’s title. In the preliminary round, each athlete completed two routines, a compulsory and an optional routine. One additional routine was performed in the finals, with that score added to the preliminary score to determine the final rankings.

A former student of the Prentice School and 2005 graduate of El Toro High School, Logan Dooley is the son of Jim and Nancy Dooley of Lake Forest, CA. A student at Saddleback College (Mission Viejo, CA) and Pikes Peak Community College (Colorado Springs, CO), Logan has temporarily interrupted his academic pursuits in order to focus all of his energy on the rigorous daily training required for Olympic competition.

“Every member of our U.S. Trampoline team has been training diligently day in and day out for 7 hours each day, six days a week, for many months now,” said Dooley, “and I feel privileged to be a part of this dedicated group of athletes.”

“I‘m especially honored to know that I’ve earned the confidence of those who have entrusted me with the emergency backup role as the Alternate Athlete for the Olympic Trampoline team -- and if for any reason it becomes necessary for me to jump in at the last minute, you can be sure I’ll do everything in my power to be ready to compete.”

“We know that Chris Estrada and Erin Blanchard are prepared to give the trampoline performances of their lives as they represent the USA at the Olympic Games in Beijing,” Dooley said – “and I’m really looking forward to cheering them on as they go for the Gold!”

# # # # #

One special junior high elective for 7th-8th graders is the Twilight Zone. The two first classes of each new semester are spent discussing Twilight Zone's creator, Rod Serling, one of the finest playwrights of his time. He was a strong advocate of using the new medium of television as a venue for presenting fine, well-written, meaningful, yet highly entertaining and absorbing, stories to viewers. He had a strong team of producers, writers, actors, composers, and cinematographers who were equally dedicated to his vision of television as a cultural medium.

The class also familiarize themselves with issues specific to the 1960s (the Cold War, nuclear annihilation, McCarthyism, isolationism, the Space Age, etc.) as well as many timeless and universal themes concerning mankind.

The students are able to identify any relevant themes pertinent to a specific episode. They not only enjoy the TZ plots but are really tuned-in to the subplots and underlying themes. Many students are re-taking this elective; because they remain intrigued, engaged, and entertained by the originality of the episodes. New students this spring semester are equally fascinated with the TZ elective. Because it is offered to both 7th and 8th-graders, they have the opportunity to explore this elective as many times as they choose.

Prentice believes this elective is on par with a similar course offered at any college or university in its expectations of the students - who, here at Prentice, do not disappoint with their own insights and observations!
